What Are Tech Support Pop-Ups?

Tech support pop-up scams involve fake error messages or warnings that appear on your computer or phone, claiming your device is infected or experiencing critical issues. These scams aim to trick you into contacting fraudulent "support" services.

How Do They Work?

Scammers typically:

  • Display alarming pop-ups with messages like "Your computer is infected! Call this number immediately!"
  • Impersonate reputable companies like Microsoft, Apple, or antivirus providers.
  • Request remote access to your device under the guise of fixing the issue.
  • Demand payment for fake "repairs" or software installations.

Examples of Tech Support Pop-Up Scams

Tech support pop-up scams often use urgency and fear to trick victims into calling fraudulent support numbers. Below are common examples:

  • Malware Warning Pop-Up: A pop-up appears on your screen warning that your device is infected with malware. It provides a toll-free number to call for "immediate assistance." When you call, the scammer pretends to diagnose the issue and charges for fake repairs.
  • Browser Lock Scam: Your screen is frozen, and you’re instructed to call a tech support number to regain access. The scammer demands payment to "unlock" your device or fix a supposed issue.
  • Fake Antivirus Support: A pop-up appears claiming your antivirus is expired or compromised. The scammer offers to renew it or fix the issue but demands payment and remote access to your computer to "repair" it.
  • System Error Pop-Up: A pop-up displays a fake system error, claiming your computer is at risk. The pop-up encourages you to call the provided number to "resolve" the issue. Once you do, the scammer attempts to steal money or sensitive data.

How to Avoid Tech Support Pop-Up Scams

  • Never call numbers displayed in unsolicited pop-ups or emails.
  • Close suspicious pop-ups using Task Manager or restarting your device.
  • Keep your operating system and antivirus software up to date.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited calls claiming to be from tech support services.
  • Report fraudulent websites or pop-ups to your browser provider.
